In 2006 Hitaveita Suðurnesja signed a contract with List and saga ehf and
Janus International regarding the design and
construction of the exhibition Energy Plan(e)t Earth or
Power-plant Earth.
The exhibition has now been put in the main power
house in Reykjanesvirkjun. The design and main thesis of
the show derives from the Big Bang and the
beginning of the solar system until our own times. There
is a timeline of various inventions that have forever
changed the lives of humans, and it should be obvious to
everyone that energy is an important part of our lives.
Various energy utilization possibilities on Earth are
shown, and what possibilities there are for energy
utilization here in Iceland as well as around the world.
Some utilization possibilities are on display – and
geothermal energy is one of the biggest options. The
exhibition is mostly interactive and guests can take
part in the exhibition.
Some further information about the Exhibition: Power Plan(e)t Earth.
Originally the Power Plant Earth Exhibition was a pet
project of the assistant CEO of Hitaveita Suðurnesja,
Albert Albertsson. The exhibition was designed Janus
International in London and the text of the exhibition
was written by Ari Trausti Guðmundsson. On various
displays and interactive screens various information can
be found on energy, the planets and the skies. A few
interactive devices can be found in the exhibition,
including a earthquake simulator where guests can
simulate an earthquake with a adjustable Richter scale.
A planet game around Reykjanes
Outside the main power station of
the plant, half buried in the lava “the sun” is located
there with the planets of the galaxy being positioned around various parts
of the Reykjanes peninsula, although in the correct
proportional distance, and size, from the sun in
Reykjanesvirkjun all the way to Reykjanesbær where the
planet furthest from the sun would be. Thus it would be
fun for everyone to take part in the game.
Do you know
- How much energy goes into heating the water for a cup of tea?
- How many planets are in our solar system?
- What the names of the planets are and what it would be like to live there?
- How much energy you need to travel to the energy plant?
All these questions can be answered by the exhibition and many others you might not have thought of.
From the 1st of November the exhibition has be open
Thursdays to Sundays from 11:30 to 15:30.
Other days (Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays) only subject to
reservations, call Róbert Kjartansson (+354) 864 3006
