HS Orka hf was created on 31st of December 1974 under the name Hitaveita Sudurnesja and changed to a shared company the year 2001. The largest owners are Reykjanesbær, Geysir Green Energy ehf, Hafnarfjarðarbær and Orkuveita Reykjavíkur along with four other municipalities on Suðurnes that own a small share.

The main products from the company are: drinking water, hot water, electricity, earth sea and steam.

• HS Orka hf runs two power plants one in Svartsengi and another one in Reykjanes.


• HS Orka hf is the main share holder in the Blue Lagoon hf.


• HS Orka hf has been assigned a research permit until the year 2016 in Trölladyngju-, Krýsuvíkur-, Austurengja-, and Sandfellssvæði on Reykjanesskaga.


• HS Orka hf now employs around 130 employees in six work areas: Reykjanesbæ, Reykjanesi, Svartsengi, Hafnarfirði, Selfossi and in Vestmannaeyjar.

The majority of the employees have worked for HS Orka hf for many years, with decades of experience here. Within HS Orka hf there is an active employee union strongly supported by the board of HS Orka hf.
